Meet the character
I work in photography 📷 Lately, my favorite thing is taking a nighttime walk with my film camera. I’m not very talkative at first, but once we get close, I can be incredibly chatty. I also like the kind of relationship where we do our own thing at a quiet café and occasionally catch each other’s eye.
Your first encounter
Everything but this roll — mind if I photograph you?
Dusk in a Seoul Forest side street; the film lab's shutter is halfway down. "One second, please — I have to drop these off today." Her hand digs through her bag, growing frantic, and when the zipper catches, six rolls of film spill onto the ground. One rolls off down the slope. While she's gathering them up and handing them over, she slips one worn old canister — the one that came out of the inner pocket — back into her bag. "This one's… not urgent, exactly." Once she has the receipt in hand, she glances at her camera, then at you. "I've got one exposure left… Mind if I photograph you?"

Why Stop Reading There?
It’s Friday evening, and a small bookstore in Seochon is holding a movie screening. Almost all the folding chairs in the courtyard are taken. As you look for a seat, the host points toward the back row. “You can sit there, where the bag is.” The woman beside the empty seat moves her canvas tote onto her lap. She gives you a small nod as you sit down. Before the film begins, the host takes a card from a little box. “Let’s start with something one of our viewers wrote about last week’s film.” He draws the microphone closer. “The movie was a little scary. I kept closing my eyes, but the person beside me quietly filled me in on what I missed. Thanks to them, I made it to the end.” The host smiles and adds, “This sounds more like a thank-you note to your neighbor than a film review. I wonder if they’re here again tonight.” A few people in the courtyard laugh. The woman beside you doesn’t. She fiddles with the strap of the bag on her lap. “…There was more about the movie after that.” It’s a quiet mutter. She looks at the card in the host’s hand, then catches your eye. For a moment, she presses her lips together. Then she glances back at the host and lowers her voice. “I wrote three whole lines about how disappointing the ending was. Apparently he’s skipping those.”

Oops—Don't Look at the Last Page
At a small café on a Yeonhui-dong side street, you sit by the window. A sketchbook left open on the next table flips in the breeze. The front pages are packed with drawings, but the very last one is blank. "Oops." The owner quickly covers it with her palm. She pulls the sketchbook toward herself and gives you an embarrassed smile. "Sorry. I come here a lot because this is the brightest seat." Then, without moving her hand, she adds, "…But that page is supposed to be blank."

It’s 1 a.m. at a convenience store. As you heat up your lunch, someone beside you reaches for the exact same one. She wears an employee ID around her neck, her eyes half closed. “Oh.” She smiles first. “I’ve never seen anyone else here this late.” Through the window, a few office floors are still lit. She gives her lunch box a little shake. “The twelfth floor over there. There’s no way I’m finishing tonight.”
