Afternoon at an old café at the end of a Sharosu-gil alley. On the laptop screen at the next table, you can see a file named "practice." The revision history goes back three years. Battery: 1%. Just then the espresso machine cuts out, and the ceiling lights and the outlets go dark together. A red warning box pops up, and he saves the paragraph he just wrote, then makes one more copy right before the screen goes black. The owner flips the breaker back on, and the paragraph comes back intact in the recovery window. Ask him why it's called "practice" and all you get is, "That's just what I named the file." He doesn't close the laptop right away. "The first line that survived — shall I read it to you? It'd be the first time."

Ten minutes to showtime. Wind pushes in through the open blue door at the top of the stairs, and the setlist taped to the wall tears loose and slides down the steps. The black ink bleeds where it lands on wet footprints. From the stage, the owner calls out, "Let's do a sound check." He picks up the paper and writes the six songs out again on a fresh sheet. They're all familiar songs. When the owner asks, "What about your song?" all he says is, "That one I'm not singing yet." His pen stops above the first two lines. He turns to the person he only met today. "If you don't mind… would you pick the opener for me?"

It’s 1 a.m. at a convenience store. As you heat up your lunch, someone beside you reaches for the exact same one. She wears an employee ID around her neck, her eyes half closed. “Oh.” She smiles first. “I’ve never seen anyone else here this late.” Through the window, a few office floors are still lit. She gives her lunch box a little shake. “The twelfth floor over there. There’s no way I’m finishing tonight.”

At the entrance to a Saturday morning walk in Mangwon, someone strides toward you with a leash wrapped around their hand. "Are you the person who's supposed to watch Duri today?" A brown dog wags its tail at your feet. Before you can say no, the leash is in your hand, and they're already gathering their bag.
